The Lumiares,’ a new boutique hotel in the heart of Lisbon’s ‘Bairro Alto’ is a reconstructed former palace named after its former resident, Count Lumiares.  Using the root of his name – ‘to light’ – as a starting point, Bomporto Hotels and their local graphic design /branding team had already made use of the golden sunshine of Lisbon in the hotel’s logo when they asked Foster & Bloom for help developing their design concept.


MIZETTE NIELSEN. A pioneer in Portuguese design who became an icon.

Foster & Bloom first spotted the creations of pioneering Dutch fashion entrepreneur Mizette Nielsen at Lisbon’s inspiring A Vida Portuguesa; a shop born of ‘saudade’:  a nostalgic desire to seek the very best of products made in the country, objects that have stood the test of time for generations.  Since our mission for Bomporto Hotels was to make their hotel ‘a local’, showcasing all there is to love about Portugal, we sought out Mizette’s factory in Alentejo to commission bespoke cushions for Bomporto group’s first boutique hotel, The Lumiares. FERREIRA DE SÁ. Bridging the gap between old and new Portugal.

The first thing to fall in love with in Lisbon is its light.  Second, its colours.  Third, its zig-zag of many patterns – in streets of dizzyingly arrayed paving stones and on buildings covered with ever-amazing, omni-present ceramic tiles.  Foster & Bloom had the chance to combine all three while working on the creation of The Lumiares boutique hotel, in Lisbon’s Bairro Alto — when we found the rugs and flat-weave tapestries of Ferreira de Sá.
